Have you ever wondered is there a place for Botox (botulinum toxin, BoNT-A) in dentistry? Can botulinum toxin really be used other than for treating the signs of aging and wrinkles?
Some dental boards across North America have issued statements stating, "Facial Injections to Reduce Signs of Aging are Not the Practice of Dentistry". While this statement may indeed be true, there are significant applications for botulinum toxin’s therapeutic effects well within the scope of dental practice. Many regulatory colleges and state boards are aware only of the cosmetic uses for botulinum toxin. However treatment of bruxism, parafunctional habits, TMD and associated headaches, relaxation of muscle pulls that contribute to gingival recession and implant failure and differential diagnosis of nonspecific pain in endodontics are some of the dental areas where the therapeutic use of botulinum toxin is indicated. Because therapeutic treatment can have associated cosmetic side effects, it is imperativ...

PTIFA is pleased to announce that we will now be holding Botox courses at the recently opened, state of the art Patterson Dental Learning Centre located at the University of British Columbia's campus. As such, select Level 2 hands-on course dates will be held in the fully modernized clinical space.
"We believe that practitioners and team members learn best when working together. The large clinical space with adjacent lecture room enables the whole team to learn under the same clinical setting. The large, open-chair layout enables increased exposure to clinical cases and increased learning and guidance from our clinical faculty and experts. We look forward to welcoming dentists, physicians, nurses, naturopaths, pharmacists and their teams to the industry's leading botulinum toxin [Botox] courses in Vancouver" said Dr. Warren Roberts, Co-Founder & Clinical Director of the Pacific Training Institute for Facial Aesthetics. In this blog post, Drs. Roberts reviews how to reconstitute Botox and Dysport, as well as some frequently asked questions on reconstituting Botox.
To achieve predictable results, avoid negative side effects and provide a high-level of patient care, 0.9% Preserved Saline is used which contains Sodium Chloride 9.0 mg/ml and Benzyl Alcohol 9.0 mg/ml.
In a study conducted in 2002, 100% of patients reported less pain, less discomfort when preserved saline was used, rather than with non-preserved saline (Alam, Dover & Arndt Ach. Dermatol. 138:510:2002). Benzyl alcohol acts as a mild anesthetic and kills bacteria making the reconstituted product last longer.
Many practitioners ask if Dysport is reconstituted differently than Botox. One vial of Botox has 100 units and one vial of Dysport has 300 units. Both products are reconstituted the same way: 1 ml of p...
Botulinum Toxin (aka Botox/Dysport) has become a recognized modality for treating myofacial pain including migraines, headaches, TMD, bruxing, clenching grinding, etc. However, many dentists and physicians are unaware of the importance of incorporating EMG (electromyograph) analytics into their diagnoses and treatment planning.
Traditionally practitioners have relied on injection templates from the manufactures to treat pain. This method relies on guess work and does not incorporate a proper diagnostic tool. Utilizing EMG can assist the practitioner determine which muscles are contributing to the problem and at what level. EMG also helps to determine when each muscle is becoming overactive again so re-injection can be properly timed to prevent recurrence of symptoms.
Electromyographs (EMG’s) are a medical device used to measure muscle response or electrical activity in response to a nerve's stimulation of the muscle. Pop...
Botox, dermal fillers, and facial rejuvenation... does it strike an interest for you? Dentists, physicians and nurses have likely heard of the different treatment offerings, however do you and your team know the foundations for integrating into your office and the key pearls for being successful?
Human beings, as individuals, like to look attractive; it is natural and there is nothing wrong with that. Some wear designer clothes and others drive expensive cars. Many attendees do not understand that the areas in which they live, for example Canada, USA, Australia, and the UK have the highest per capita use of Botox in the world. Our patients have heard about the “magic” of Botox. They have seen it in the media, Googled and read about it, and they know that for years other people have been enjoying the benefits of this treatment: looking younger, well-rested, happier; having improved self- confidence and self-esteem. It definitely affects how other peopl...
PTIFA is proud to offer a microneedling training and certification course using the InnoPen - a Health Canada approved professional automated microneedling device. Learn the mechanisms of microneedling, the science behind the clinical results and the benefits for your patients and your practice.
Medical Microneedling (also known as Medical Needling or Collagen Induction Therapy) is a non-surgical and non-ablative procedure used to treat various skin conditions such as aging (wrinkles, stretching), scarring (acne, surgical), hyper-pigmentation, cellulite and hair loss. Microneedling technology (i.e. automated pens, rollers, etc.) use very fine, sterile needles to puncture the skin and to create micro-channels deep into the skin in order to stimulate new collagen/elastin production. The resulting micro-channels also aid in infusing therapeutic serums, allowing for greater penetration and increasing overall efficacy of active ingredients.

A frequently asked question is who is able to provide Botulinum Toxin (aka Botox, Dysport) and Dermal Filler treatments, as well as who can participate in our training courses. We have answered some of the questions we receive below.
Botulinum Toxin is a prescription medication and treatment can only be given by a licensed dental or medical practitioner or nurse. Some provinces allow naturopaths and pharmacists to provide treatments as well. We always recommend that practitioners check-in with their local college to confirm scope and for practice guidelines, as it can vary by jurisdiction. The medication is typically distributed directly from the manufacturers directly to licensed prescribers.
Dentists, physicians, nurses, naturopaths and pharmacists currently do not graduate with any type of formal training in t...
